NEW YORK – Get on the Number 7 subway train in Midtown Manhattan and take a ride through the story of immigrants in America today. The Number 7 train is nicknamed the “International Express” for the many immigrant communities it connects as it makes its way from the center of the city into Flushing, Queens.
In 2000 the train was named a National Millennium Trail because it stands as, “a metaphor for the migration of all the world’s people to America’s shores.”
We asked seven riders of the Number 7 to share their journeys with us. Where did they come from? What did they hope to find? And what does New York City – their adopted home – mean to them?
