‘What I Carried’ Volume Four: Love Notes

In this installment of “What I Carried,” two journalists share stories behind a pair of love letters.

Fi2W’s Miranda Shafer tells the story of an old telegram sent by her grandmother, a fiery, trailblazing woman who left her life in rural Canada to meet the man of her dreams at the top of the Empire State Building. Miranda told the story to Hannah Biskind, legal advocate at the Urban Justice Center and contributor to City Limits.

Hannah Biskind, in turn, told the story of a love note to Miranda Shafer.  It was from her own grandmother, and it gave her strength when she was far away from the people she loved.
